Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
A hysterosalpingogram, or HSG, is a specialized X-ray procedure used to evaluate the shape of the uterus and check whether the fallopian tubes are open. It’s an important test for understanding possible causes of infertility, especially when there’s concern that scarring, blockages, or structural changes could be affecting conception.
At Veritas Fertility & Surgery, you don’t have to travel to a hospital radiology department for this test. We offer HSG in our own office—making the process more convenient, comfortable, and efficient for our patients.

What is an HSG?

An HSG combines X-ray imaging with a contrast dye to create a detailed outline of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. This procedure allows us to:
- Identify blockages in the fallopian tubes
- Detect scarring or adhesions
- Evaluate the shape of the uterine cavity
It’s one of the most direct ways to assess whether the tubes are open, which is essential for natural conception.
How the Procedure Works
- A small, soft catheter is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
- A special contrast dye is introduced, which flows into the uterine cavity and through the fallopian tubes.
- X-ray images are taken in real time to capture the dye’s movement and identify any blockages or abnormalities.
The entire test typically takes less than 10 minutes.

Benefits of an HSG
- Clear assessment of tubal patency (whether tubes are open), or whether there is scar tissue surrounding the end of either tube
- Detailed uterine imaging to detect structural problems
- Immediate results—images are reviewed promptly after the procedure
- Essential for a fertility evaluation when tubal factors are suspected
