Advanced Pelvic Ultrasound

Veritas Fertility & Surgery offers advanced pelvic ultrasound in the comfort of our office. Ultrasound is an essential tool for evaluating infertility and other gynecologic issues such as heavy or painful periods. Ultrasounds provide important diagnostic information which help guide treatment decisions. Additionally, ultrasounds are much less expensive and easier to complete than other types of imaging, such as CT scans or MRIs.

While many doctors order ultrasounds to be completed in a hospital radiology department, Veritas Fertility & Surgery provides in-office ultrasounds, which is more convenient and cost-effective for our patients. Our team of sonographers have special training to evaluate the uterus and ovaries with ultrasound. They know precisely what Dr. Puthoff is looking for with each scan, which improves the quality and value of the ultrasounds performed in our office.

Advanced Pelvic Ultrasound is performed in-house at Veritas Fertility & Surgery

Another benefit of having your ultrasounds performed at Veritas Fertility & Surgery is that Dr. Puthoff can review each ultrasound image himself, gleaning valuable information that cannot be obtained simply from reading a radiologist’s report. Performing ultrasounds in our office also allows Dr. Puthoff to make important treatment decisions based on his review of each patient’s ultrasound images.

Veritas Fertility & Surgery offers several types of advanced pelvic ultrasounds, each with a distinct purpose. Our most common ultrasound procedures include a baseline pelvic ultrasound, follicle study, and saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS).

A baseline pelvic ultrasound is an internal vaginal ultrasound which is recommended for most patients as a part of their initial evaluation before starting treatments. This kind of ultrasound provides a clear evaluation of the uterus and ovaries, allowing for the diagnosis of uterine masses or ovarian cysts. During the procedure, we also complete an antral follicle count to determine egg reserve. In special circumstances, a transabdominal ultrasound can be performed instead of a vaginal ultrasound.

A follicle study is a series of ultrasounds used to determine whether ovulation is occurring properly. Over the course of several days around the time of ovulation, we perform internal vaginal ultrasounds to measure ovarian follicle growth and to confirm that the follicle ruptures normally and releases an egg. Each ultrasound is performed in our office and takes just a few minutes. A follicle study in an important part of the fertility evaluation we provide and is also used to assess a woman’s response to fertility medications.

A saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS) is a specialized pelvic ultrasound that provides more detailed images of the uterus. An SIS is performed in our office and takes about 10 minutes. During the procedure, the uterus is filled with a sterile saline solution via a catheter placed through the cervix. A vaginal ultrasound transducer then captures detailed images of the uterus and uterine cavity. An SIS is particularly useful in assessing scar tissue inside the uterus, uterine fibroids, uterine anomalies (such as a uterine septum), and for diagnosing a uterine isthmocele (which is a defect in the wall of the uterus due to a prior C-section).
