Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SIS)
A saline infusion sonohysterogram—also called a saline ultrasound—is a safe, minimally invasive imaging procedure used to evaluate the inside of the uterus. By combining ultrasound with a gentle infusion of sterile saline, this test provides a clearer, more detailed view of the uterine cavity than a standard pelvic ultrasound alone.
At Veritas Fertility & Surgery, we perform SIS in the comfort of our office to help identify conditions that may be affecting fertility or causing abnormal bleeding—quickly, efficiently, and with minimal discomfort.

What is a Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram?

An SIS is an ultrasound exam in which sterile saline is introduced into the uterine cavity through a small, soft catheter. The saline gently expands the cavity, creating contrast that allows the ultrasound to detect even small changes in the uterine lining, such as:
- Uterine isthmocele (cesarean scar defect)
- Uterine polyps
- Fibroids that distort the cavity
- Adhesions (scar tissue)
- Congenital uterine anomalies (e.g., septum)
Because the procedure is performed with ultrasound (not X-ray), there’s no radiation exposure.
How the Procedure Works
- A thin, flexible catheter is placed through the cervix into the uterus.
- Sterile saline is slowly infused while a transvaginal ultrasound is performed.
- As the saline outlines the uterine cavity, the contour of the uterine cavity can be carefully evaluated to identify any abnormalities in real time.
The procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes.

Benefits of SIS
- Highly accurate detection of uterine abnormalities that may be missed on standard ultrasound
- Quick and convenient—performed in our office, no hospital visit required
- Minimally invasive—no anesthesia or sedation needed
- Immediate results—findings are reviewed with you during the same visit
